Lizzie McGuire: AfterRome

Chapter One: Bye, Bye Best Friend

Elizabeth Brooke "Lizzie" McGuire was listening to music and reading the latest issue of Seventeen magazine when the phone rang. Since Lizzie was grounded until school started because of her adventure in Rome, Italy, on a school trip she waited to see if her mom called her. She was usually able to talk for about 5 minutes.

"LIZZIE! IT'S MIRANDA! FIVE MINTUES!" Just as Lizzie figured: it was for her and she had five minutes. She hadn't heard from Miranda since she got back from Mexico City and was eager to talk to her best friend. She went out into the hall and picked up the reciever

"Hey, Girl! What's up!" Lizzie said into the phone.

"Hi, Lizzie! How are you?" Miranda's voice came over the line.

"Oh, pretty bored. This call is the highlight of my day." She replied. Miranda chuckled.

"Gordo told me everything about Rome, including the kiss," Miranda continued. "Congrats, girl!"

"Can you feel me blushing?" Lizzie asked playfully. Lizzie and her old friend David "Gordo" Gordon had reconnected in Rome and kissed on the roof of the hotel.

"So what's new with you?" Lizzie asked. Miranda was quiet for a minute. She was only quiet when she was nervous about something, so that made Lizzie nervous too.

"What's wrong?" Lizzie asked.

"I'm moving," Miranda said, her voice breaking. Lizzie almost dropped the phone.

"What! No! You can't move! Not right before freshman year!" Lizzie shouted.

"I'm sorry, Lizzie, but when I was in Mexico City my uncle Luis gave my dad a job offer he couldn't refuse. It was a for a fluent Spanish speaking computer technician. And I mean, you know how dad was so unhappy since his company merged. I'm not happy about it either but it's got to happen." Lizzie burst into tears. Jo's voice came over the line.

"Miranda, Lizzie's got to go now, sorry." Lizzie managed to say goodbye between sobs and ran to her room. She grabbed the picture of her and Miranda and hugged it close to her chest. Jo came up to comfort her daughter.

"Marisol and Eduardo told us. They said Miranda wanted to be the one to tell you, so your dad and I agreed to keep our mouths shut.. Sorry, sweetie, you'll miss her." Lizzie hugged her mother, still holding the photo close to her chest.

A few weeks later, there was a knock at the door at 10:00 AM on Saturday morning. Sam McGuire answered the door. It was Eduardo, Marisol, and Miranda Sanchez.

"Can I see Lizzie?" Miranda asked, her face worn with worry. Mr. McGuire nodded and Miranda raced up the steps, two at a time and didn't even bother to knock on Lizzie's door. She swung it open and hugged her friend.

"You'll have to rock High school without me," he said after a long, meaning goodbye hug. "Think you can do it?"

" Only if you promise to call me every single day." Lizzie said.

"Agreed," Miranda said, nodded. They hugged again, as both girls felt tears coming to their eyes. Lizzie pulled away.

"I-I wanted you have something," She said. She pulled a beautiful mahogany journal out from under her pillow and handed it to her friend. "I thought you could write your songs it in."

"Oh, Lizzie, oh wow." Miranda breathed, examining the beautiful engraving on the front." To Miranda. Friends Forever, Love Lizzie. "Now I;m going to really chriesh this." Miranda and Lizzie went downstairs to the kitchen, where Lizzie and Miranda's parents were sitting around the table talking.

"Travel safe," Jo was saying. They saw the two girls and Ed and Marisol got up.

"Ready to go, mijo?" Ed asked. Miranda nodded and gave the whole McGuire family, Matt included a hug. Then they all went outside and Lizzie waved until she couldn't see the familiar Sanchez station wagon anymore.
