Not many people knew that Luke and Seth used to be friends. But Luke does. Luke remembers a curly haired boy with big brown eyes on the first day of third grade in Mrs. Decker's class.

He asked if Seth could sit next to him and she thought it was a wonderful idea.

Luke liked how Seth and his stuff looked together in their desk. Luke liked how quiet Seth was at first, and then how much Seth talked. It wasn't long before Luke declared Seth his new best friend. They would sneak under the stairs at recess to read comic books, and even though Luke didn't think they were that interesting, he went anyway.

In November Mrs. Decker made Seth and Luke stay in from lunch because of a glue incident. Seth had been drawing cool pictures on the floor and Luke had been helping with supply. Mrs. Decker sentenced both of them to clean up the mess.

Seth had been biting his lip while scrubbing the floor so Luke kissed him.

It only lasted a moment and their teeth clanked together and Seth had really dry lips, but to Luke it was everything. Seth yanked himself away, stammered something, and ran away.

After that Seth wouldn't sit next to him anymore, but that was okay. It wasn't like Luke had a crush on him or anything or that Luke had cried when Seth stopped hanging around him.

Because he didn't. He didn't care about that stupid boy.

Luke even managed to forget about it until fifth grade.

In the summer before fifth grade Luke saw Seth in the mall with his dad. Luke's mom had left to look at jewelry leaving him alone at the food court.

Luke saw Seth across the tables. He waved and smiled at him.

Seth went pale and pretended not to notice.

In eighth grade Luke joined the water polo team and started dating girls and everything was fine until Luke and Seth were alone in the locker room after gym one day.

Seth was moving slowly because he had been hit really hard in the ribs with a basketball and Luke had been running laps for back talking the teacher.

Luke and Seth's lockers were separated by a locker. When Seth moved to shut his, Luke, on impulse, reached over and placed his hand over his.

Seth's eyes went wide with fear and repulsion.

Luke punched him in the ribs and went to water polo practice.

The End.
