This is derived from the myth of Aphrodite spilling blood onto a white rose to try and help her wounded lover Adonis. In Persia it is believed that if the petals fall from red rose that has been cut in an English garden it is a superstitious sign of bad luck. In the 18th century, lovers that were forced to keep their feelings for one another secret used the red rose to communicate their love to each other.
