Bringing Home the Bacon
Penelope Garcia walked into the mansion she shared with her boyfriend, David Rossi, dumped her bag onto the hall table and slipped off her shoes. She was tired. Her Saturday had been spent filled with hours of playtime with her Godson Henry as his parents spent a much needed childless day. She loved Henry with all her heart and loved spending time with him but she was plain worn out.
David had promised to take care of things at home and as she made her way to the kitchen she realized he was true to his words. Not that she had any doubts. David always kept his promises. She grabbed a glass from the cupboard and pulled open the refrigerator door. She stopped moving, mouth agape as she stared into the cold storage box.
"David," she called out loudly after a few moments.
"Yes dear," Dave replied from the study.
"What the hell is this?" she asked as she continued to stare into the fridge.
Dave exited the study and joined her in the kitchen. "What are you talking about?"
"This!" she exclaimed as she waved her glass-toting hand in the air.
Dave frowned. "It's a glass."
"Not this!" she growled as she shook the glass. She pointed into the fridge. "That!"
Dave leaned over the counter and peered around the open door. "That would be bacon."
"Bacon," she mimicked. "Would you care to tell me why our refrigerator is filled with nothing but bacon?"
"There's a shortage."
"A shortage?"
Dave nodded solemnly. "It was on the news. There's a bacon shortage."
Penelope closed the refrigerator door, succinctly placed the glass on the counter then turned back to her boyfriend. "A bacon shortage?"
Dave nodded again.
"And you decided to stock up?"
Dave smiled. "I knew you would understand."
Pen smiled without humor. "Let me guess, the freezer is full of bacon too?"
The smile faded from Dave's face. "I'm beginning to get the feeling that you're not as excited about this as I am."
Her smile widened. "You are a smart man. Did you buy anything besides bacon?"
Dave paused. "I, uh, I got distracted by the bacon."
She slowly drew in a deep breath and let it out. "David…"
"I need to re-home some bacon and go buy more food," he said before she could finish.
"I'm going to go take a bath," she announced. "I expect dinner – without bacon – when I get out."
"Yes dear," Dave replied as she slowly made her way out of the kitchen. Dave pulled his phone out of his pocket and dialed a number. "Hey Hotch, you need some bacon?"
