Checkmate
One Shot
By Seer of Light and Fire
Chess; one of the most serious games you can. Wars have been made over a game (Seer: apparently this is true, the man who taught my after school care place told us to help us realize how serious he was). And now it had a greater effect.
Will brushed the blood away from her eyes. Nerissa and Phobos had teamed up, making this battle almost impossible. Her uniform was torn beyond anything. Scraps of cloth were the only thing truly covering her, similar to the uniforms of all her friends.
Cornelia was bracing Caleb; he had taken an energy blast in the side. Taranee and Hay Lin were both leaning against each other. Both had huge cuts all over their bodies. Irma was guarding the fallen form of Mat. She had a slash across her forehead.
She remembered the words of the new student at the Institute, Blair Torven. 'When all else fails, when all your major and minor pieces seem to be lost, all you can do in get a checkmate; you have to force Phobos to stand down.' Blair was five when the abilities of a seer had formed. Nerissa had tried to attack her, but Blair had a vision to warn herself and got out of danger.
Will grabbed a sword from a fallen warrior. It was Drake, one of Caleb's close friends. His eyes closed in relief at the sight of her. She sadly was the least injured Guardian. Thankfully, they had managed to take out the past Guardians already. She started across the field.
She walked around the fallen fighters on the battleground. Phobos wasn't paying attention and Nerissa was having serious trouble with a recently freed Elyon and Yan Lin. Both were using their powers to their greatest advantage.
Will crept up silently behind him. He was to busy mocking a weakning Elyon to notice her behind him. She placed the heavy blade to his neck. He turned head back towards her, shocked, yet knowing that if he moved, she would kill him.
She had won the battle.
Blair smiled faintly at her chess board. The Queen piece held her sword to the neck of the King piece. Even in Meridian, no matter how soft, her voice could be heard around the field.
'Checkmate.'
