Emergency surgery.
Docs said it was touch and go for a while but finally Sam was allowed to see Dean.
He would never get used to the sight in front of him.
All the monitors, wires and tubes.
He was surprised when Dean's eyes blinked open to mere slits. Heavy-lidded, glassy and confused.
"Dean?"
Dean blinked again, his gaze distant. "C'n we… take the…. road trip now? Y' promised. Pls."
Sam knew that Dean wasn't really with him. Probably high on painkillers and other happy juice.
"Later, Dean. For now just get better, okay."
