Jay was, well, the most emotional of the group. He was talkative and sometimes annoying, with a lightning quick temper and a spark of ingenuity that truly showed through his elemental powers.
Zane was the exact opposite of him.
Maybe not the exact opposite, since they both loved machines and video games, but Zane didn't really show the emotions that Jay did, if any at all. When Jay had first met Zane, he'd tried to help the guy on his sense of humor, but it was a lost cause. Zane laughed at the wrong times, was as cold as his element, but as pure as the color he'd worn.
Jay loved the color white almost as much as the color blue.
White was just so, so Zane. It was bright and innocent, but blinding if angered. It was cold, but it would wrap you in its light to keep you warm. Zane showed all of these traits so plainly, he was kind of adorable.
Then, he found out Zane was a nindroid.
He'd come up with the name, since it seemed right. After all, he couldn't call his brother a robot, right? That would be rude. Jay was ecstatic when he found out, but didn't seem to understand until later why Zane wasn't happy about it. That happened to him sometimes. His excitement got in the way of empathy, one of his flaws. That night, he heard Zane crying. Crying. He'd never, ever seen Zane crying, so he knew something was wrong. So, being the only one up, he went to where Zane was sleeping and hugged him, whispering how it was okay and that he loved him. The cries ended, and Jay fell asleep with a smile on his face.
The next day, Zane made Jay his favorite breakfast, and he knew he'd done something good.
Jay missed Zane's cooking.
Sure, it wasn't the most important thing he missed, that being Zane himself, but it was the simple aroma that wafted out of the kitchen, causing him to go in and see Zane wearing his silly pink apron that Jay missed as well.
No one dared go into the kitchen after Zane died.
Jay walked into it and saw the space covered in dust. What was Zane's favorite dish again? Ah, yes, sushi. Zane had said that after making so much of it to pay the rent for the super expensive penthouse, he'd taken a liking to it. Jay went mechanically through the motions of cooking, not even paying attention to the food, just letting the memories flash before his eyes of all the times he'd anticipated Zane's meals. When the sushi was done, he went to Zane's room, hoping to give it to him as a surprise. He walked in, smiling as wide as possible, ready to give Zane his food and-
Oh.
Right.
He'd forgotten that Zane was dead for a moment. He closed the door behind him and leaned against it, sliding down to the floor. He stared at the food he'd prepared, the food Zane loved. He picked a piece up and began to eat, the memories floating through his head once more, haunting him. He felt tears stream down his cheeks. He was crying, something that was common for him before now, but now it seemed a rare occurrence. He was crying because Nya was going to leave him for Cole, because everyone in Ninjago except for his family and P.I.X.A.L were rejoicing over peace when a good man's life was lost in the process, and because Zane was dead, leaving Jay to eat his favorite dish all alone in an empty room.
Jay knew that if he was found by anyone, they wouldn't dare tease him for crying, even though only Nya had shed a tear.
After all, he was the emotional one of the group, right?
