Chapter One: The Next Morning
My eyes open as I hear movement next to me. Lancelot turns towards the window. The blue-purple sky tells me it is nearing dawn. I suddenly remember the fertility charm around my neck. Had it worked?
"You will know soon enough." I tell myself silently. I imagine suckling the child from last night. No matter what Arthur said, people will know if the child is Lancelot's. The thought of my child being shunned for being illegiatmate and looking like Lancelot terrifies me.
"If the child is to be Lancelot's, he deserves to know about the charm that Morgaine gave you." My mind says. I gently touch his shoulder and her turns to look at me.
"I must speak with you." I wispher. Lancelot gets dressed and hands me my dress. I edge toward Lancelot's side of the bed, careful not to wake Arthur. As I get out of bed Lancelot turns away.
"He must be as ashamed as I am." I think. I put on my dress and motion for Lancelot to follow me. Once we are in the hallway, I turn to face him.
"I think you should know that...I don't know what the outcome of last night will be, but...Oh, God forgive me." My voice starts to break.
"What is it My Lady?" Lancelot asks, a worried look on his face. I take a deep breath and look him in the eye.
"Morgaine gave me a charm." At the confused look on Lancelot's face I add "A fertility charm." Remembering that the pagans have many different charms for many different purposes.
"When?" he asks happily He must think that she had given it to me earlier, and that I am already carrying Arthur's child.
"Last evening." I reply, my voice breaking.
"But last night..." his voice fades.
I nod.
Our eyes meet. He now understands my fears.
"Go. Get washed and dressed." I say.
He turns and leaves.
