Happy Friday the 13th! I suppose I should be posting a creepy, scary Friday the 13th story lol. But I'm not. Instead, I'm posting a super short, super fluffy early S13 story. This sprang from something I'd seen on tumblr talking about how, in the finale, Jack was wearing shoes that closed with velcro. It was simultaneously adorable and sad and this teensy tiny story was the result. Hope you enjoy!
Shoe Shopping
"Those are old man shoes," Dean remarked, turning his nose up at the pair Jack was clutching. Shaking his head, Dean waved at the wall of brand name athletic shoes instead. "These are better."
Jack frowned at the display, but didn't comment. He also didn't let go of the white, Velcro atrocities he, for whatever reason, found so wonderful.
Cas tilted his head, staring at the price tags. "They are quite expensive, Dean."
"Cas, seriously?" Dean huffed. "I'm ok with spending a little more to keep the kid from getting bullied on the playground."
"What is a playground?" Jack asked, sliding his foot into the first old man shoe.
"We'll take you to one later. After we get you some shoes." Dean started pulling a few different sneakers off the wall display. "What about these? This pair is cool."
"But I like these," Jack said, smiling as he put on the second old man shoe.
"They are functional," Cas said, nodding in approval.
Dean's jaw dropped. "Seriously?"
Jack was still grinning. He leaned down and ripped the velcro fasteners open, then pressed them shut again. Repeating the process several times, Jack looked utterly delighted. Just when it was beginning to get on Dean's nerves, the kid looked up at him with such joy on his face that Dean already knew what tennis shoes he would be buying.
"Look at that!" Jack pulled the velcro apart again. "These are amazing. I've never seen anything so incredible!"
The velcro was ripped open and shut several more times.
"Dean, aren't these the greatest thing ever?" Jack asked eagerly.
He opened his mouth to argue that they absolutely weren't, but he just couldn't quite bring himself to disagree with the kid.
From his left, he heard a beleaguered sigh. Turning, he caught Sam's eye.
"Just buy him the shoes," Sam said, shaking his head.
"Fine." Dean threw up his hands. "Fine, but we're also getting him another pair."
He tossed a more stylish tennis shoe to Jack.
"Try that on. Ah, ah! Yes, you can have that pair," he said, anticipating Jack's protest before it began. "But you're gonna get another pair, too."
Hideously ugly old man shoes or not, he had to admit the kid's utter delight with the velcro did kind of make him happy.
He turned to Sam and said, "I'm not letting him grow up without knowing how to tie a pair of shoes."
Sam busted out laughing and walked away.
Dean hung his head and closed his eyes listening to the sound of velcro being ripped open over and over and over and over...
the end
Hope you enjoyed this itty bitty story. :D
I'll be posting the next chapter to "Fifty Miles" on Monday. Just couldn't help myself from throwing this out. :)
