Lit by Darkness
Edward was sitting in his room, his hands clenched into a fist. He wasn't sure why he was mad, because he had the world at his feet. If marrying the girl of his dreams wasn't enough, he now had a beautiful child, of his kind. No, he wasn't mad at any of this. He was mad at his kind, what made him exist like this. He detested being a vampire, but he got over it after a few years. Now, this sudden wave of anger frightened him. When you're a vampire, you don't have much to be frightened of.
He got up from his seat and walked down the spiraling staircase, taking each step slower than a human would. He pretended that each step was things he hated about his kind. Eternity. Stomp. Doomed to a life in hell if he got killed. Stomp. Forced to be a murderer. STOMP. He almost fell through the stair, but managed to keep his strength under control. Bella looked at him from her spot on the couch.
"Edward, why are you stomping?" She asked, her topaz eyes showing her curiosity.
"Was I stomping?" Edward lied through his teeth, running down the last few steps and approached Bella on the couch.
"If you call slamming your foot with enough sound to wake up the dead, then yes, I suppose you were stomping." Bella joked, her face cold. It came out sarcastic, almost sounding like anger.
"I'm… sorry. But, Lauren's secret mate, Lillian, is after us. I guess I can't relax when you're in danger." Edward forgot about his sudden anger and softened his expression.
"She's more after Jake than anybody, you realize. Why she should come here is a mystery." Bella turned away, as if picking up her scent. Edward turned too, just as Renesmee walked through the doorway. She looked a lot like Bella now, her height barely surpassing Bella's.
"Dad, can we hunt? I'm starving, and the deer prancing around outside smell scrumptious." Renesmee sat on Bella's other side, crossing her leg. Her eyes looked charcoal with a reddish tint.
"Renesmee, have you been cheating again?" Edward smiled, shaking his head. Renesmee grinned, not trying to hide this fact at all.
"Maybe just a bit. But don't worry, I went to that old farmhouse on the outskirts of Forks. Can we go hunting now?" Renesmee asked, her voice sounding a bit cheery.
"Fine, but just for a little bit. It's almost dawn and the sight of us is… a bit stupendous to most." Edward got up from his seat, dusting his trousers off. Renesmee followed and ran out the door, not permitting Edward to catch up. Edward bounded after her.
I remember now, Edward thought, It's my wife, my daughter, and action that bring me happiness. It's also reassuring to know that in the afterlife, I won't be alone. I've got my family to follow me. Edward ran out of Bella's sight. Bella grinned and followed them, hoping her legs could keep up.
