Corleone Family Mansion
Staten Island, New York City
September 29, 1945
It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a lovely day for a neighbor...
But for a young and beautiful Sicilian-American woman named Constanza Corleone, or "Connie" as her dear friends had nicknamed her, it was a most magnificent day. Indeed, today was the day of her wedding.
That is right, today was the day she was to be married to her new husband Carlo Rizzi, who was a civilian and an employee involved in middle management for the Genco Olive Oil Company, owned by the Corleone Family.
To say the very least, Connie was truly happier than Oedipus on Mother's Day and her brothers were extremely proud of her, as was her father, the legendary and esteemed Don Vito Corleone.
Vito Corleone was the widely respected and somewhat feared Boss of the Corleone Crime Family, one of the infamous Five Families that made up New York City's Italian Mafia. He was a powerful and wealthy man with many judges, corporate big-shots, and politicians in his pocket, to say nothing of his influence in the vast criminal underworld of New York City and the surrounding suburban areas of New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York State.
Don Corleone was a man who had the power to perform many favors for people, and the common people who were lucky enough to be in the know would come from all over the New York City metropolitan area to visit him and ask him for a favor on the day of his daughter's wedding. From ordinary citizens such as the local undertaker and the owner of an Italian Bakery in Lower Manhattan to even noted judicial and political figures on both the local and state levels, everyone came to visit the Don and ask him for a favor.
Don Vito Corleone truly lived up to his reputation and his name. He truly was The Godfather and he was a man to be honored and respected. Everybody knew this, and he was only one of five bosses (or Dons, as they were sometimes known as) that so often dominated the underworld and criminal enterprises of New York City, using their power and money to influence those higher-ups in the legitimate civilian world as well.
Late in the evening as the wedding of Connie Corleone was starting to wind down and things were at long last finally wrapping up for the night, there was one final guest ready to visit Don Corleone and humbly ask the Godfather himself for a favor. At last there was one final favor to be granted that night, the night of his daughter's wedding. The favor was from a woman in her mid-thirties, the widow of a loyal Corleone Family henchman who dutifully served the family with utmost loyalty and a strong sense of competence.
"Don Corleone, my husband was always loyal to you and your wonderful family. He died for that loyalty and you have always been a good friend to my son and I, even after my husband's untimely demise. Forgive me, but I must sadly ask you for one favor. My son Sora has fallen in with some bad men, low-life fools and he needs your help. Please, Godfather, I will do anything to return the favor." said the widow before kneeling and kissing Vito Corleone's bejeweled platinum ring.
The Don smiled and reassured the saddened widow before addressing her concerns.
"Some day, and that day may never come, I may call upon you to do a service for me. But until that day comes, accept this favor as a gift."
Later that night, Don Corleone addressed his feared enforcer, the legendary hitman known as Luca Brasi.
"Luca, my most valued enforcer and trusted friend, I need you to find someone for me. A young man by the name of Sora, he needs your help and I want you to take him under your wing and show him the ways of our family. Let him know of this thing of ours..."
Luca Brasi nodded in agreement and went out on his new mission, to find Sora and induct him into the business of the Corleone Family...
