Siftstripe was the first to notice the smoke. The white she-cat had been curled up in her nest, thick tail wrapped around her body, when she smelled it.
She snapped immediately awake, realizing the whole camp was on fire. She leapt up, brushing her tail over her denmates to rouse them. "Fire! Get up!" Siftstripe yowled. A ginger tom whom she recognized as Hollytree, another warrior. "C'mon, we gotta warn the others!" Hollytree shouted.
The two rushed out of the burning den to the rest of the destroyed camp. Two apprentices, Pricklepaw, a spiky brown she-cat, and Sunpaw, a golden tom, each with a kit in their mouths, dashed to the warriors."M-my mentor's dead!" Pricklepaw wailed, as Sunpaw tried to calm her.
"Sweetpaw!" Hollytree called out suddenly, and without warning, leapt into the flames. Siftstripe chased after the ginger tom, as he heaved the limp form of a small golden she-cat, her only sign of life her weak, spluttering breaths. Suddenly, a branch above crashed down above Hollytree and his apprentice, pinning Hollytree to the burning ground. Siftstripe shut her eyes and swallowed hard, gripping Sweetpaw's bleeding scruff in her jaws, and bounding out of the destroyed camp behind Pricklepaw and Sunpaw
the remnants.
