Disclaimer: buffy is not mine
AN: i was getting really sick of Buffy being such a bitch and this is what came out. i always loved Dawn and Spikes friendship.
In his one hundred and twenty years he had never known what it was to be loved. Sure his mother had loved him but it was the deep affection and tender care every mother has for their son. There was Cecily who he had loved with every fiber of his being only to have his heart ripped out by her words. You're beneath me. Then there was Dru, his beautiful dark princess who he had loved for more than a century but who had never returned his affection.
As time went by, as he spent years by her side, he came to see that as his place in the world, to love but to never feel love in return. Then, with his head was full of the slayer, his dark princess had left him and his love for Buffy formed into something so strong it eclipsed anything he had ever felt before. But these women, who he had loved with all his heart, would never return his feelings. He would die alone miles and centuries away from those he knew and loved.
It became his fate. But there was one who would not let him die alone. She would not let him slip away thinking he was never loved. His little bit loved him more than anyone in his life ever had. She patched him up when he got injured fighting alongside Buffy, she played cards with him when he couldn't sleep and sat with him when the world offered nothing but darkness and lonely nights. In the end it was not the love of a women that saved him but the love of an ancient mystical key in human form.
She took him away when he was broken, left her family and friends behind to take him away. She went to school and he taught self defense. She made new friends and he became her family. He taught her everything he knew and together they kept their little town safe. She bought friends home who thought he was cute, introduced him to boyfriends she hoped he wouldn't scare away. And for the first time in over a century he felt truly loved. This little girl had taken his broken heart and mended it.
He was there the day she got married, even walked her down the aisle. His name was John and he loved Spike's little bit and he never stood between them. He knew the truth; it had taken a while to reconcile the image of his girlfriend patrolling the night for nasties with the girl who experimented in the kitchen. To understand why she would leave behind her family to whisk away a broken vampire. Thus there family of two became three.
Her name was Kat Reynolds; she was one of Dawn's nurses. A mugging and a black eye had made Dawn give her a business card. She went to a few of Dawn's classes and they became friends. He met her on Christmas. She had no family so Dawn invited her to join them. And suddenly he wasn't alone anymore. For the first time in his entire existence a girl fell for him hard. She loved everything about him. She loved his past, she loved the way he took care of Dawn, and she loved the way he got excited after a good kill. She loved him.
And god he loved her. He had his nibblet and her husband and their little baby bit and he had Kat. God, he had Kat. Their relationship was so intense and he thrived on it. She let him claim her and he loved her more. They had eternity together, an eternity to live, love and watch over their family.
Ten years after she had taken him from his crypt and put him back together they went back. Dawn wanted her sister to meet her new family; she wanted to make sure they were alright. They had everything they could ever want; family and friends she wanted to ensure her sister had the same. Ten years later they were stepping out onto the sidewalk in front of her old house. They were different people, they'd changed so much.
The Scoobies were unprepared.
