This is told as a conversation between someone on a small Federation outpost, and a Starfleet Lieutenant who happens to have beamed down. Neither are anyone you may have heard of.
Red-Shirt Run Amok
"Thanks for bringing these supplies down, Lieutenant. Have you got time to give me some news? We hardly hear anything out in this little outpost."
"I think I've got a minute. The biggest story this week is about the latest doings on the Enterprise."
"What, again? Did Kirk break the Prime Directive?"
"I think he might have, I don't remember for sure. Everyone's used to that though, and it's not what the excitement is about. One of the security men went on a rampage on the ship."
"You're kidding! What was the guy's name?"
"I don't remember. Saw his picture though. Very non-descript sort of fellow."
"What did he do anyway?"
"Well, according to Captain Kirk's official statement, Kirk gave him an order he didn't like, and when Kirk tried to enforce it he got violent. He attacked Kirk and then ran out of the room. Witnesses say that after that he got a phaser from somewhere and destroyed the transporter room. The chief engineer says it'll take at least two weeks to repair the damage."
"Wow. What's Starfleet doing about it?"
"They've got him on trial now, for disobeying and assaulting a commanding officer, and destroying Starfleet property."
"Good. He'll get a demotion in rank and probably prison time besides."
"Not a chance."
"What do you mean?"
"No jury in the Federation—Starfleet or civilian—will convict him."
"Why not? It sounds like an open and shut case!"
"Oh, it is. All the witnesses agree. Even he admits he attacked Kirk and destroyed the transporters."
"But they won't convict him."
"He's pleading self-defense. And there's no doubt that it's true."
"How can destroying transporters possibly be in self-defense?"
"Didn't I tell you the order Kirk gave him just before it all started?"
"No, but what difference could that make? Wait. You don't mean he…?"
"Yes. Kirk had ordered him to beam down with him."
"You're right. An open and shut case."
"Clearly it was all in the interest of self-preservation."
