"C'mon, Baby Girl!" Lin used her nickname to call Suyin over. She had used that nickname since Su was born 4 years earlier.

Su climbed onto the chair Lin was casually laying in. In her hands Lin held a short picture book. Su from the book to her sister with a questioning gaze.

"You, my dear sister, are going to read to me." Lin handed her the small book.

"But, you're 10. You can read."

"I know but I want to see how well Aunt Katara's lessons are going."

Shrugging, Su opened the book and started to read. However, it wasn't long before she stumbled. "T-t-t. Lin, what's that word?"

"Sound it out, Baby Girl. What do you think it is?"

Suyin huffed in annoyance. Lin was doing just as Katara had. Anytime she messed up the just told her to "sound it out". "What's wrong?"

"You're just like Katara. Everyone tells me to 'try harder' and to 'sound things out' but I can't. I'm 4 why do I have to learn right now anyway? I suck at reading!"

"You're right." Lin said this as if Su hadn't just pointed out one of her insecurities. Suyin gave her older sister a confused look. "If you don't try to get better you'll always suck."

Suyin now possessed a hurt look. "I am trying!"

"No you're not. You're complaining."

"You know reading is har-", Lin quickly cut her sister off.

"I do know. I wasn't very good at it either. Now, try again." Instead of protesting, though she started to, Su continued to go through each part of the word.

That evening, Toph Beifong walked in ready to would have but she couldn't "see" either of her daughters. She called out their names in worry. Toph was relieved to hear a response from the next room.

"What are you girls doing?"

"Mama! I can read now! Well, I already could, but now I can do it better! Lin helped me. She was a little mean about it but still good!" Suyin rambled on.

"Did she now? That's great…"

….

"I can't believe Aunt Lin taught Mom how to read!" Opal exclaimed her voice an octave higher from the "cuteness".

"I can't believe she called her 'Baby Girl'." Korra snickered for which Asami lightly hit her.

Lin rolled her eyes at their responses. The others in the room -including Suyin, all her children, Tenzin, Kya, Bumi, Mako, Bolin, and Tenzin's kids- had large grins on their faces. A few might have teared up (cough-Bolin-cough).

"I didn't teach her to read I just helped her practice. Can we stop talking about my childhood now?" Lin asked-pleaded is the right word but Lin Beifong doesn't plead.

"Oh, no. I want to hear more about when you and Mom were close!" The twins said in unison.

"I'm not telling any more stories!"

"Oh! It's not a story but one time, Lin told me she would rather I become a murderer than a whore!" Su said while laughing. Almost everyone was laughing at that, and those who weren't were still smiling ear to ear.

Bumi continued for Su, "I believe she actually said, 'If you become a murderer, I'll disown you. If you become a whore, I'll kill you!' That was when Su was only 10!"

"You can at least be thankful I'm not either." Su muttered.

The mood darkened slightly.

Lin glanced sadly at her younger sister. Why couldn't things have been as they were when they were young? Why did they have so many problems now that they didn't have before?

"I'm more thankful we get to laugh about it now." Su gave her sister a small smile. Maybe those problems weren't so bad.

"Ok, but seriously, 'Baby Girl'?!"

"I was 10!"

"You called me that until you were 14, and after that I was 'little girl' or 'kiddo'!"

"Shut up!"

Very short one-shot. Thank you for reading! Please review! I do not own anything in this story. (they're cute- it's cute. life is great :D)
