I Should've Gone Fishing
by Dream Painter
- - -
He asked me to go, but it wasn't my thing,
I smiled when he called it the "Sport of Kings,"
Now part of my heart aches and it stings . . .
I should've gone fishing.
-
He and Rodney were going fishing, he said,
I wanted to teach John a "real" sport, instead,
No one went, and now . . . now, he is dead . . .
I should've gone fishing.
-
He came to me while I was playing chess,
I was winning a lot, 'cause I am the best,
Now, I'd trade it all to have put on a vest . . .
I should've gone fishing.
-
Last I saw him, I was working with paint,
A beautiful portrait—alien, but quaint,
Now, I would toss it to have back that dear saint . . .
I should've gone fishing.
-
I am a scientist, no fisher, and so,
I made up a reason to not to have to go,
He was my best friend . . . now, he'll never know . . .
I should've gone fishing.
-
No one predicted what that day has wrought,
And so, as their custom, their pleasures they sought,
Now they are haunted, each soul, this one thought:
"I should've gone fishing."
