The clock tolled as I let my loose fitting, white blouse fall to the ground. I could smell the vampires waiting for me to take that fateful step into the sunlight. I blocked out all the infantile voices of the people around me as the clock tolled again. I wanted to die without hearing the idle chatter of these fragile humans. Again, the clock tolled. I'll be with you soon Bella, I thought to myself. Even in this doomed hour thinking her name brought a little smile to my face. The clock tolled for the fourth time. I waited. From under the clock tower the booming chimes emulating from the bells almost sounded pleasant. They say that when you're about to die you see your life flash before your eyes, all I saw was her. My Bella. My life. I thought about that first day in biology. Then about our meadow. Everything, even that horrible last day. The clock tolled again, and again, and again. I kicked out of my shoes and raised my foot preparing to take the ominous advance into the shining sun. The clock tolled again. I didn't notice anything, for I had closed my eyes before the clock tolled its final chime.

Bella was there, in my arms.

"Amazing," I breathed, "Carlisle was right."

"Edward," her breathless voice chided, "You've got to get back into the shadows! You have to move!"

I smiled softly.

" I can't believe how quick it was. I didn't feel a thing--there very good," I mused.

I kissed her head inhaling the bouquet of freesias that was her skin.

"Death that hath sucked thy honey of thy breath hath had no power yet upon thy beauty," I quoted from Romeo. "You smell just exactly the same as always, so maybe this is hell. I don't care I'll take it."

"I'm not dead," Bella screamed in my ear, " and neither are you! Please Edward, we have to move. They can't be far away.

I was entirely confused by everything she was saying.

"What was that," I asked politely.

"We're not dead, not yet! But we have to get out of here before the Volturi--"

Realization flicked over my face as I gently positioned Bella behind me. We were not dead, but somehow, beyond all odds, we were together.
