A/N: Just a short story I felt like writing. Nothing special. Nevertheless, Amethyst deserves a million thanks for being the best and swiftest beta-reader is the world. Happy (very belated) birthday, Ame!
Disclaimer: All characters, places, concepts, etc. that you recognise from the Harry Potter books belong to J.K. Rowling. The poem is from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, chapter thirteen. This story was inspired by an essay I read over at the Harry Potter Lexicon, entitled "Who sent the Valentine" by David Frankis. It's worth a read.
Valentine of a Different Kind
She sucked on the end of her quill, holding a rumpled piece of parchment which was dotted with crossed out words and smudged fingerprints. Reading over it once more, she corrected some misspelled words and then smiled with satisfaction. Swiftly laying out a new roll of parchment, she dipped her quill into an almost-empty bottle of scarlet ink. With her tongue sticking out of the side of her mouth in concentration, she copied her poem out in the neatest handwriting she could manage:
His eyes are as green as a fresh pickled toad,
His hair is as dark as a blackboard.
I wish he was mine, he's really divine,
The hero who conquered the Dark Lord
Finished, she rolled up the parchment, and, with some difficulty, fastened it with a red satin ribbon.
She sent it on its way. Now all she could do was wait. It didn't take long-lunch came to an end and the corridor was soon full of jostling people. She spotted him entering the corridor, and evidently, so did the dwarf she'd entrusted her valentine to. He accosted Harry in a crowd of first years, but he had a hard time getting him to stay still. The dwarf had little patience, and plopping down on Harry's legs unceremoniously, he delivered her singing valentine to him. She didn't notice the crowd of snickering people-all she saw was Harry, with a slightly embarrassed smile on his face. Well, at least he was smiling! He must have liked it.
She smiled to herself and floated back up to the deserted, flood-prone bathroom on the second floor.
Thanks for reading, please review and tell me what you think, it's much appreciated =)
