A mere glance started it all.
He had stared at the girl from beneath his cap, watching her miserably pass by. Her large eyes were glazed with tears; a humiliated blush graced her cheeks.
They were only strangers, walking past each other on the sidewalk. And yet...he stopped for this girl.
She had nearly bumped into him, having not seen him standing in her way. When his feet did come into her downcast gaze, she jumped a little, startled by the sudden appearance. Her eyes shot up, meeting his usual blank expression.
As time stood still for that brief moment, the silence was deafening for both.
Then a hand slowly rose and rested on her head, as if to pet her hair. It had been an awkward but sincere gesture. And as the short girl stared at the emotionless face, she somehow knew that she could trust this stranger.
Such meetings soon became a habit. Neither he nor she know who initiated it, but they both had found reasons to continually cross each other's paths. As they saw each other more frequently and the tension subsided, they would even share a couple words.
And every time they passed each other, he knew their odd friendship grew.
Maybe he will even smile at her next time...
