Smoking and Thinking of You

By: Rachel L. Mustang

Roy Mustang never wanted to join the military. He never wanted to have to kill anyone, though he was yet to know the horrors of what he would do in Ishbal. He felt as if he were simply throwing his life away. Few knew it, but it was when he was in the academy that he first told himself he was going to change the country. He used it as a lame excuse with no meaning then, just needing to feel like he was accomplishing something by joining.

The young black haired man sat up in bed, glancing over to find his roommate was also curled up in his bed, snuggled tightly under the covers. Roy smiled to himself, remembering how the older boy had declared it was too cold in the dorms to sleep by yourself and stubbornly crawled into bed next to Roy.

Maes was the only real friend Roy had at the academy. He usually kept to himself. He had learned quickly to keep his mouth shut since he had an opinion about everything and not everyone cared to hear.

He reached over to the side table and grabbed his pack of cigarettes. Pulling one out and lighting it, he took a long drag. It was a bad habit he decided he would have to break if he ever actually cared. Cigarettes weren't even allowed in the dorms, but somehow, Maes always managed to sneak a pack or two in. Roy didn't know how nor did he really want to.

He opened the window to let the smoke drift out into the night, shivering slightly from the chill that entered the room. Roy stayed like this for a long time, staring out into the dark, wondering if he was just throwing his life away. Somehow, when he had time to just sit and think his thoughts always led back towards that. He hated so much what he was doing with his life that was once filled with big dreams that all washed away the moment he enlisted.

Roy had gone through three cigarettes before he felt the arms wrap around his waste in a much accepted warm embrace. "Roy…what're doin'?" Maes asked, slurring his words slightly due to his tired state.

"Just thinking, Maes." Roy replied still staring out the window as he let one hand absentmindedly reach up and rest on Hughes's.

"About what?" the older boy asked, leaning against Roy's back, slowly beginning to rock both of them.

Roy let them sit in silence, enjoying the moment as he thought about his answer. "You." He only half lied. He loved Maes and didn't feel the need to burden the other with his own selfish worries.

Maes smiled warmly and Roy turned around, placing a kiss on the other boy's lips.

"I love you." They both whispered almost at the same time as they pulled apart. "Come on back to bed, we'll have to get up soon." Maes pulled both of them down into the bed made for one person. Roy lay with his back to Maes's chest, the latter's arms still wrapped firmly around him.

"Good night." He sighed, but Maes was already asleep. Roy just snuggled down closer to the other boy, thankful for both the embrace and the warmth the other body provided. He closed his eyes and slowly let sleep take over. No, as long as he had Maes, he wasn't just throwing his life away.

End

A/N: It is now 9:21 in the morning and I didn't sleep last night, so this little idiot is gonna go drink some chocolate milk and take a small snooze on the couch. Don't forget to drop a review on the way out. Thanks.
