Unstoppable

By Deimos

"Nidoking, horn drill!" Gary commended as his most prized pokemon rushed towards the electric mouse.

Ash simply smirked, "Pikachu, agility and thunder bolt." The mouse nodded obediently, followed up with an energetic "Pi!" The pokemon then dodged his massive opponent's deadly horn, and disappeared into blurs of yellow and brown. One second later, the only sound in the forest was that of electricity crackling and the dull thud of a Nidoking falling.

"I guess this really mean I'm better than you now, doesn't it, Gary." Ash gave Pikachu a high-five as it returned, battered but victorious.

"Alright, Ash!" Misty cheered as her enemy-turned-friend finally beat his lifelong foe. Brock then engulfed them both with a bone-crashing hug. Once they've managed to get themselves free, Ash and Pikachu jumped up simultaneously and did a victory dance.

"Some things never change." Brock remarked as he and Misty looked upon Ash. "Yeah, but what happened to Gary?" Looking to where the battle took place, the trio noticed that Gary was already gone.

"Who cares? I'm hungry. Let's go to my mom's place, afterwards we'll get Professor Oak to heal Pikachu.

Back in the forest, Gary was running. His legs burnt from the exertion and his lungs felt ready to burst, but he refuses to stop.

"Gary, you can be anything you want to be, alright? Never doubt that you can be the best. I have faith in you." The woman with gentle eyes smiled as she tucked her son in for the night.

The six-year-old prodigy stared without comprehension at the person leaving. "So you don't want to stay with me anymore?" The man sighed, and knelt down to look him in the eyes, "Look, Gary, I just can't stay in Pallet anymore. Since your mother died, this is the first time I've truly been happy. The professor will take good care of you, son."

Gary sighed as he looked out the window, this was supposed to be the greatest day of his life. The day when you hit the big 1-0. He sighed once more and turned the page of his textbook.

He almost leaped in joy as he got his first pokemon. Life would be different now. He would become the best pokemon trainer in the world and prove that he CAN do something other than studying. Gary looked out from his convertible and grinned. It was one of those flaky kids from his school, hours late for his pokemon. They're all the same: big dreams, but oh so little knowledge.

"You know, Gary. If you had more empathy with your pokemon, you might have been better than Ash. But I guess that's a lesson you'll never learn." The 12-year-old looked upon the only father figure in his life, looking for any small part of sympathy in the professor's disappointed gaze.

Gary looked up to see that he had inadvertently ran back to the professor's house. He started to open the door when familiar laughter drifted out of the window. Looking in, he saw the Professor with that brat Ash. Narrowing his eyes down to a slit, he turned sharply and walked towards his convertible. Picking up his cell phone, he called his fan club. Revving up his engine, Gary made a vow. He won't stop. He will never stop.
