Lizzie tries to cover it up with hair ribbons, muslin gowns, and jeweled accessories. The blonde curls, wide blue eyes, and sweet smiles help too.
But try as she might, there are four things she simply cannot deny.
One. She is the daughter of Lord Alexis Leon Middleford, Head of the Order of the British Knights.
Two. She is the daughter of Lady Frances Middleford, née Phantomhive, probably the most feared woman in all of England.
Three. She is the fiancé of the Earl of Phantomhive, the Queen's Watchdog.
Four. She must―she will―protect Ciel. At all costs.
So even though she wants to find a corner and cry for a while; even though she wants to curl up in her bed and hide under her sheets; even though she wants to cover herself in lace, ribbons, and gems, Lizzie has no choice but to wipe her tears and stand up.
For someone like her who annoys Ciel, for someone who can't even make him smile, this is the least she can do. She will protect Ciel at all costs.
