We're Safe Now

"I want to hide the truth
I want to shelter you
But with the beast inside
There's nowhere we can hide"

Demons by Imagine Dragons

We were running low on supplies. Food. Everyone's stomach's made angry noises now, and I know Jamie's doing everything he can to keep from complaining. We would have to go on a raid.

"Keep me and Jamie here and risk being separated from you. Take us and risk all of us getting caught."

"So what are we supposed to do?" Jared kept is voice quiet, not wanting to wake Jamie up. Neither of us liked the options, but that was all we had. "I don't want to leave you, but is dangerous taking all of us," he reasoned.

"Everything is dangerous now. There's nothing we can do," I countered, my voice unexpectedly hard. "I'm not leaving you," I said, softer. Jared stepped forward and put his forehead on mine. "I can't leave you," I whisper.

"Then we'll all go. But I'm the only one going in. Okay?" We were still separated, but like this Jamie wouldn't have to go inside the alien's houses. He wouldn't have to be left alone.

"Okay," I echo. Jared kissed me and had no intention of stopping. I was exhausted even though we did close to nothing today. I could feel the tiredness seep into my veins. Jared noticed how tired I was and stopped, leading me towards the couch. He covered my body with a thick wool blanket while I leaned my head on his shoulder. "Jamie was there when the Seekers came with my dad," I blurt out. I've never told anyone this story. I didn't even tell Jamie what happened when I told him to close his eyes. "We had to hide from them. Jamie had to hide from his own dad," I went on, talking fast and not making much sense, something I do when I'm tired. "I tired explaining that it wasn't him, that there was someone else in his body. He wouldn't listen. He was only nine." Tears spilled over onto my face.

"You don't have to talk about it," Jared whispered. He knew it was upsetting me.

"We had to wait for them to leave, wait for them to stop ripping apart our house and going through our things." My voice is thick with tears. Jared stroked my hair.

"We're safe now." Jared's voice was low and rough. "I won't let them take Jamie from us." Us. We were a family now. Nothing will change that.

I don't really know what this is but I wanted to write something for Jelanie, and I finally did. It's really short but I didn't know how to make it longer. Please review, pm me, or message me your thoughts. Thank you for reading, I hope you liked it!
