Disclaimer: I do not own Death Note (but it would be awesome!) nor do I own the poem, "This Is Just To Say"
A/N: This is set in the time when L and Light are handcuffed together and Light has no memories of being Kira.
WARNING: This is NOT yaoi
Light and L had been working all day. After the other investigators left, they had retired to their upstairs quarters to work on their own. Light had fixed a quick dinner a few hours ago and they hadn't even left the kitchen table after they finished. Each man continued their research, faces glued to their computer screens.
Knowing it was extremely late, Light checked the clock on his computer. His concentration was wavering. He rubbed his sore eyes and leaned back in his chair. He direly needed something to wake him up, at least long enough to come to a clean stop. He glanced around the small kitchen, his eyes resting on the refrigerator. Then, he smiled, remembering his hidden surprise.
Light peeked around his laptop at L. The young raven-haired detective had fallen asleep. Or, most likely, crashed from his everlasting sugar high. Light, keeping his eyes on him, slid his chair back as quietly as possible, lifting his arm in the air to keep the chain from clinking against the table. He began tip-toeing towards the fridge, careful to watch not only his sleeping friend, but also the chain that kept them together. He realized that if he went too far, the chain would tug and wake L, and Light's plan would be foiled.
Light sneaked towards the refrigerator, but when he got near the door, the chain would go no further. Light seethed; frustrated that he had gotten this close. There was no way he could just go back to the table after the prospect of getting one of his favorite secret treats. He looked around and searched for some way to open the door. He spotted a ladle, left lying on the counter top from the soup he had made earlier. He stealthily picked it up and looped the end through the handle of the refrigerator's freezer.
After multiple failed attempts to open the door, he finally got it. He lied the ladle back on the counter as silently as possible and reached into the open drawer, pulling out the roll of tape that was kept there. He picked up the ladle and a nearby fork and taped the ends together. Light reached into the freezer and pushed aside various frozen foods until he got to the back of the freezer. Taped to the back wall was a small note, which Light speared with his homemade contraption. As he removed the note from the tines, he heard low chuckling behind him.
Light spun around, no longer caring about noise, to find L standing behind him, a broad smile across his face. "Quite clever, Light-kun. However, if you will read that note, you will find your efforts are in vain. I offer my apologies, but I could not resist. They were absolutely delicious though. So sweet.."
PS: I decided to write this after reading a poem called "This Is Just To Say" by William Carlos Williams. For anyone who is interested, here is the short poem.
I have eaten
The plums
That were in
The icebox
And which
You were probably
Saving
For breakfast
Forgive me
They were delicious
So sweet
And so cold
