Prompt #032 Prompt #032. Sunset

A/N: Part request, part Fanfic100. Anyway, I thought it was cute. If not…disturbing, just slightly.

The sky was tinged a light peach color over Figaro Castle. As Edgar looked up at the sku, he thought of the coin toss that had sealed his fate as king. It had been the last time he had seen his brother, until now.

The instant he had laid eyes on his brother, his old feelings had started to return. He had come up here, to the highest point in the castle, to think about these feelings. And, of course, it all led back to the coin toss. Would he have rigged it to give his brother what he wanted…if he didn't feel this way?

"Shit," he said under his breath. Why did it all have to be so complicated? If Sabin wasn't his brother…it would all be simpler. "Sabin," he said louder, shaking his heaad, trying to clear his thoughts.

"Yes?" a voice behind him asked. "What's wrong, Brother?"

Edgar turned slowly, willing his heart not to speed up, or his voice not to waver. "Nothing," he said. "Sorry, I…was just thinking out loud."

"Oh," Sabin said. He came to stand next to his brother, and the two of them looked up to the sky in silence for a time.

The sky was a dark blush color before anyone spoke again.

"About the coin toss…" Sabin said tentatively. "Why did you…?"

Edgar laughed nervously. "You knew about that?"

Sabin smiled and turned toward his brother. "Thought you'd gotten away with it, huh?" he joked. But his face quickly became serious again as he asked, "Really, why did you do it? You gave up your dreams…all for me."

"Sabin, I…" Edgar said, mustering all his courage. It was the perfect time to tell him. "I…have something to tell you." The younger man nodded encouragingly. "The reason I rigged the coin toss…" Sabin continued to look at him expectantly. "It's easier to get women when you're king!" he said.

He had chickened out, backed down when it mattered. And on top of that, he must have seemed like a jerk to his brother.

"Oh," Sabin said, his face falling. "Well, that is something you'd do," he said, somewhat coldly. He turned around, to the stairs, and as he did, Edgar thought he saw a tear glistening right below his eye. The youth took a few steps toward the stairs.

"Wait," Edgar said. Sabin turned toward him, and their eyes met. Edgar could see the hurt he had just caused his brother in them. But…why…? "There was another reason," he admitted quietly. Sabin's eyes lit up a shade, and he took a step toward Edgar. "I…well…I love you," he said.

"Edgar," Sabin said, his eyes now a million times happier, "are you…do you really…?"

"Yes," the man said.

Sabin ran over joyously and threw his arms around his brother.

And Edgar kissed him, long and slow and sweet, until they were both gasping for breath.

Then, they turned and watched the sunset together, wondering what the future would bring.
