Title: Bear

Summary: Astor's thoughts as Rita evacuates the house with her and Cody. Takes place immediately following 'Father Knows Best.'

A/N: So, after I watched this episode, this story idea popped into my head. I tried to ignore it by playing the new game on the Dexter website. The game turned out to be a screamer. I shoulda known from those instructions…keep your speakers turned up for clues, my ass.

So now I was WIDE awake, and decided to write the story after all. So here it is. It's short, and is designed to sound like the thoughts of a still-not-quite-awake child. I was forcing myself to limit my vocabulary the whole time.

Enjoy.

Disclaimer: Dexter, in all his I'm-a-serial-killer-but-you-still-luv-me…ness, is not mine. Neither is anyone else from the show...

Huh...wha. I'm awake, I'm awake...

"Wha's goin' on?" I ask tiredly. Someone's hand is on my shoulder, shaking me.

"C'mon sweetie, wake up now." Someone is whispering. The voice sounds familiar. I focus on the dark figure now moving to Cody's bed.

Mom

My sleepy brain tries to figure out what's happening while Mom wakes up Cody. It's still dark out. It can't be time for school yet. Why did Mom sound so nervous?

Mom's holding Cody. She runs to the door and I follow her, still holding Bear. Why's Mom only wearing a bathrobe?

Now we're in the kitchen. Mom grabs her keys and pocketbook off the counter. The lights are on. She looks shaky and scared.

We run to the back door. Nobody is talking. Mom quickly opens the door and sorta pushes me out first. The ground is cool on my bare feet. It feels good.

Just before Mom shuts the door, I'm pretty sure I hear a moan from the house.

Oh.

Other A/N: Hope you liked it. I'm thinking of doing a companion piece with Cody's thoughts, but I dunno yet. And yes, I named Astor's bear Bear. So sue me.

Actually, please don't.

Read and review…it'll make bunnies happy.
