A/N: This had been in my drafts for about a year so I thought I might as well finish and publish it so... here we are!
A cool breeze ruffled the dancing flames, rushing through the group of high schoolers. The camp fire cast yellows and oranges over their smiling faces. The smell of burning was met with howling laughter as Sam somehow managed to set his stick of seven marshmallows alight.
Rachel sat on the grass, propping herself up against Finn's knees. She toasted a marshmallow at the end of a fork before turning and feeding it to her boyfriend, 'accidentally' missing his mouth with a giggle. The sticky sweet ended up covering his left cheek instead.
Tina smiled widely as she talked to Quinn, perched on Mike's lap. She sighed contentedly, pecking him on his nose and pulling him close for a hug.
Blaine looked over at Kurt, smiling fondly.
"You know if we were in a cartoon you'd actually have hearts in your eyes?" Quinn said with a knowing smile.
"What?" Blaine asked, thrown off guard by her casual, 'it's obvious' demeanour. "I don't like him! I- I mean not- not like that!"
"Go over and talk to him, I'm sure he won't mind some company!" she advised him brightly with a small wink giving him a gentle push in Kurt's direction.
Stumbling through the grass, Blaine headed over to Kurt. Why was he nervous? This was his best friend. It was just Quinn and her mind games making him feel weird.
"Oi, you." Kurt blinked, waking himself from his daze, his face brightening at the sight of Blaine towering over him.
"Hey! Come here," he said, patting the ground next to him. "I'm trying to find the different constellations!"
Blaine settled himself down, snuggling closer to Kurt than strictly necessary under the pretence of being cold. Who he was trying to fool, he didn't know. Not that Kurt seemed to mind.
"And?"
"Well I found the great bear before but then I lost it," he admitted quietly.
Blaine chuckled quietly, remembering Kurt's proclamation before the trip to find and name every constellation.
"Well, aren't you a genius!" he teased, nudging Kurt's side with his elbow.
"Yes! Yes I am, thank you for acknowledging it!" Kurt joked with a giggle.
They lay together until the last embers of the fire stopped glowing and the rest of the group had said good night, shuffling away in pairs and clambering into their caravans to try and get as good of a night's sleep before the sun rose.
"Come on, I think we need to go to sleep now." Blaine muttered, standing up and brushing himself off before extending a hand to Kurt which he took with a shy smile.
They walked over to their shared caravan in a comfortable silence, both shivering from the cold night air and clambered in not-so-gracefully.
Blaine silently thanked the darkness of the night for hiding his rosy blush from Kurt as he curled up close to his best friend and promptly fell asleep, dreaming of the day he would finally pluck up the courage to ask Kurt to be more than his best friend. But for now, as long as he had Kurt in his life, 'best friends' was perfectly fine.
If you read this, bless you, I love you :)
