Summary: What if Blake's compulsion wore off leaving Kat with nightmares? Takes place shortly after the season finale.

Characters: Aidan/Kat

Title: Soul's Mate

She woke up with her sheets twisted around her startled. She took a few deep breaths steadying herself. She was safe in her room with Aidan. Kat twisted to look beside her; his side of the bed was empty. She grabbed her terry cloth bath robe knotting it tightly and left the bedroom for the kitchen.

"She doesn't remember anything," Aidan's voice beckoned her towards the living room. She stopped where she could hear him.

"Yes, I'm sure." The floor creaked under her footsteps. "I'll call you back." Kat walked into the room; he gathered her into his arms pulling her into his lap.

"I woke up and you weren't there," she couldn't keep the worry from her voice.

He brushed her hair back off her face: "You had the nightmares again didn't you? You know I'd never hurt you." He pressed a kiss to her forehead; she moved to sit beside him.

"I know. It's just... they're so real Aidan. I can still smell her rotting body. I can still hear you stammering some explanation." She heard her own heart pounding as she ran away from that house.

"It's as if it really happened. That's crazy right?" She nervously chuckled. "You, Josh, and Nora didn't kill someone did you?" Is that why they had to get married so quickly? So he couldn't testify against her?"

Aidan laughed; "Why is it Nora? I'll have you know Josh has a nasty right hook. And you don't want to cross him before he's had a morning coffee." She laughed along with him and quickly forgot about her dreams.

"I'll see you tonight," Aidan kissed her a last time at the front door the next morning. He walked a few blocks down the street and hit the send button on the last number called:

"We need to meet now." He summoned and hung up. He turned into the park, noticing the red hair; she was there already.

"It didn't work. Whatever you did to Kat; it didn't take. She has nightmares now about what happened. She's starting to wonder if they're real." He looked at Blake desperate for answers. She thought for a few moments;

"There's a myth that when we meet our soul's mate they see our true selves no matter what." Aidan looked at her disbelievingly; he'd been alive over 200 years with Bishop and never heard of such a thing. 'Then again Bishop failed on a lot of counts as a sire. He pushed aside the notion for a moment.

"Is it possible she's a witch or something and she doesn't know it yet? She hasn't come into her powers?" Aidan put forward a second explanation. Blake shrugged;

"It's possible yes. I have run into witches I haven't been able to compel, and they've usually been strong. They've also known they're witches. The only way to know for sure is to tell her and find out. I think it's unwise to try compelling her again."

Aidan wouldn't try it either; he couldn't violate Kat like that. Nora would stake him for sure. "You'd tell her then?" He sought advice. Her voice grew sad:

"If I had a chance at true love, I'd take it no matter what it meant." Blake walked away signalling their meeting was at an end. Aidan stood staring out at the river; 'How do you tell someone everything about you was a lie?' How do you tell someone you can't give them children? That you won't age? How do you ask them to love you anyway?'
