Prelude to Sudden Flame
The siege began so long ago, when I was just a child.
Scared I cowered in my nest as the fortress shook with battle.
The roaring of Man, Elf and Dwarf disturbed my rest in day.
The screams of my dying allies echoing ever to stay.
Waiting as the terror continued. The Enemy not content to let be.
The Master in his malice constantly training and honing me.
Sat in the Dark as I grew, impatient at the pace.
Told to wait in safety, as progenitor of my Race.
Blood, Teeth, Scale and Bone. All were taken for the creation of the future.
The Men grew daring. The elves still cautious as the years stretched into decades.
Mortals were not made for such lengthy conflicts. Still the growth was not swift enough.
As ever the walls of my home proved just as tough.
Impatience began to gnaw in my mind. Master always insistent on my secretive hide.
Would I never be able to stretch, to show the Enemy my might?
The time was approaching, the time for my fight.
Finally the day came, where the enemy grew bold. They massed here together in numbers untold.
The Master was distracted, even his Might stretched thin. Hence my opportunity came.
My chance to taste blood. To hear the bones crunch under my feet.
The smell of their Terror and utter defeat.
As the Master unleashed the volcanoes I burst through the gate.
The smoke, dust and confusion adding chaos to my wake.
The arrows were as rain, trifling and irrelevant.
My fire was as the Sun, magnificent and maleficent.
Their eyes watered with my heat. Knees trembling in horror.
They came to storm a castle, but instead met the face of fear.
Had I not said, had I forgotten to mention my Name?
First my titles. The Great Worm, The Deceiver, Father of Dragons, The Gold Worm of Angband!
First of the Urulóki . Now I know your awe, surprise and dread.
For my name is Glaurung and I shall not stop until you are dead.
