-Peeta's POV-
I wake to the thud of something landing next to me. I look over, hoping for it to just be Cato dropping his bag or something like that, but expecting the worst. These are the Hunger Games after all. But I am still surprised to find that there is a tracker-jacker nest right next to me.
Then my wrist seems to catch on fire. And my shoulder. I stumble away, hearing someone screaming "To the lake! To the lake!"
I try to stand up, forgetting about all of my stuff, in too much pain to care. I sprint away in the direction I think to be the lake. I risk a brief look over my shoulder and see Glimmer twitching uncontrollably, then drop to the ground like a mannequin with its strings cut. The cannon fires. This brings me to my senses and I run to the lake.
Finally, the lake is close and I leap into it but not before I get another sting on the back of my leg. An ocean of blue surrounds me, but I manage to kick my way back to the surface. Only a few wasps have followed us, and they plunge into the water in pursuit of all of us. But tracker jackers can't swim and they die almost immediately, floating to the surface with their legs sticking up and wings plastered to their body.
Crawling out of the water, I can hear the cannon, probably announcing the death of the girl from 4. Cato shouts something about killing Katniss. No! I can't let him kill her! I sprint off in the direction I think to be the way back. I get there, and I can see Glimmers' body, mutilated and swollen beyond recognition. Then I see Katniss standing next to her, fumbling with a bow and sheath of arrows.
"What are you doing here?" I ask. "Run! Run!"
She staggers off in the opposite direction.
My brave move does not go without consequences. Cato sees me. The sword slashes through my leg before I even see it coming. Blood pours down my leg, and the pain is a thousand times worse than the tracker jacker stings.
Cato's face is full of fury, utter hatred for me because I not only let Katniss get away, but urged her to. I have to run away but I can't. I do a sort of limp/crawl away from the careers and they don't seem to follow me. I still make an attempt to cover my trail, just in case.
I start to feel dizzy, not just normal dizzy, but to the point that I feel like the world has turned upside down and I can hardly see a metre in front of me without it speeding by like I'm back on the really fast train I was on, on the way here.
I begin to see things, things that shouldn't be here. Giant scorpions the sizes of dogs appear on the tree trunks, snakes slither around and over my feet.
Finally, with a trail of blood behind me and one of the snakes making its way to the back of my neck, I collapse on a weedy river bank.
I come to a number of hours later, still lying in a bed of weeds. It is now night time. I know that I have to hide myself otherwise the careers will find me and kill me. There is a large puddle of mud next to me so I use that. Soon, after much stretching and pain, my entire body is muddy and camouflaged to the bank.
