An alternate ending to, "setting things straight, sort of"

Pal? "Yeah?" the bemused little boy answered. For a while, she just looked down and wearily stared him straight in the eyes as for a moment she floundered in her own little sea confusion.

"Just...just what am I?" she finally implored in a whimper. The child's eyes went wide, "can we talk about this tonight?" Frankie offered him a tender smile, "of course we can kiddo"

"Bedtime pal", Frankie said with a slight yawn. "All set" Mac chirped happily already under his warm covers. With a smile Frankie plopped herself on her charge's bed, "so some day huh?" "Yeah", Mac replied with a bit of a nervous smile. Frankie, however simply ruffled his hair, with a light chuckle, "I'm sorry I kinda put you on the spot today, but I am curious". "No it's ok I'm glad you did" Frankie gave him an affectionate smile, "whatever you tell me pal it won't hurt my feeling at all, I promise." Mac gave a slight nod as he spoke, "I guess I've always thought of you as a mom, because even before I came here you would help me with my homework, snuggle with me on rainy days, and just spend time with me," but I'm scared Frankie, if I start calling you mom I may lose you and I've already lost one". Frankie felt her heart shatter at hearing the way Mac had been feeling, and wasted no time cradling her sweet boy in her arms as she felt his warm tears on her nightgown. "It's ok Mac just let it out I'm right here", she cooed softly. After 10 minutes of crying; Frankie finally spoke "Mac, as much as I want to I can't guarantee that I'll always be around after all you of all people know how fragile life is, but I can tell you that I'll always be with you and that you don't have to be scared". She squeezed him tight, "I love you so much Mac, and whatever happens know this you're never alone. "I love you too mom."

I hope at least somebody liked this, but if you didn't just don't rip me apart in the comments
