Hey! I had to write this for a competition ages ago about what has influenced me and made me the person I am today. I found it on my computer recently and thought I'd upload it, let me know what you think!
Life at 80mph
Your world zooms past at 80mph,
too slow to catch up with your mind
which is on a train, with a boy,
hundreds of miles away.
There is an arrogant girl with dark brown hair, you avoid her,
the boy you are with is not so sensible.
You watch his new nemesis storm off to the dungeons,
shadowed by snakes.
You don't smile very much,
it feels as though everyone compares you to a rabbit,
but it's easier to hide your teeth than it is to cover his scar,
a bolt of lightning that no-one can ignore.
The people are different here, in the countryside,
you learn about a different way of life,
you hear words you've never heard before,
your brother and the boy, soon adopt their ways.
You are the goalkeeper; it's the first time you've played this game,
you catch the black and white ball and the girls win;
it's his first game as well, he almost falls from the sky,
he catches the little golden ball though, and the lions win.
You are one of the cleverest in your class,
you make a best friend in PE, the thing you are worst at,
you are with the boy when he saves a girl from a troll,
they are soon best friends, you think that she is a lot like you.
You take your exams, and you sing in the end of year concert,
it's the first time that you face an audience on your own,
and the first time you see the man who gave the lightning bolt scar,
you know when it's over, it will happen again.
The end of the year, the beginning of your life,
you are both back on the train, as your world zooms past,
your childhood has long gone, if it was ever there,
you'll be told to grow up, but you'll always retreat,
to the pages of books, where you are always young.
