Oppression

Hawke knows oppression.

She knows it from the way her brother acts toward her, all anger and hatred and blame, and from how he withdraws when she needs him and lashes out when she's at her weakest.

She knows it from the way her mother expects her to be perfect, how she wants her to always be willing to help, to listen, to do the very best she can, even when Hawke is exhausted and terrified and doesn't know how to think or feel or act.

She knows it from the stories Varric tells of her, and the way people expect her to live up to them, to become the fearless, incorruptible Champion they all think she should be.

But she doesn't do anything about it, because if she bears it, no one else has to.
