"Is there something bothering you?" Kenshin asked, Kenji had been casting him looks all through dinner, obviously wanting to know something.
Kenji shook his head and continued his dinner, everyone was now staring at him.
"You've been really quiet," Kenshin commented, trying to get him to talk.
"How old are you?" Kenji asked.
There were several stifled laughs at this. Kenshin glared around the table and everyone bent lower over their plates.
"Why do you ask?"
"Well, our class is studying the war and you did participate in it, but that was a long time ago."
"It didn't happen a long time ago," Kenshin said, so he was lying, that had been over fifteen years ago, and felt longer than that.
"Then how old are you?" Kenji asked.
"I'm 47," Kenshin said. He could tell this little fact shocked his son. The boy's eyes had grown wide as he stared at his father.
"I didn't know you were that old." Kenji said, "I thought you were around Mom's age."
The next day Kaoru found Kenshin staring into the river and had to smile, she'd never seen her husband be concerned about his age before. She walked up behind him.
Kenshin looked up. "What are you doing here?"
"You know you still look young."
"I'm not really concerned about that."
Kaoru laughed, she had seen him get up over three times last night and could guess at what he'd been doing.
"Really," she said, "Guys who were 30 would kill to have your looks."
A small smile came across his lips
"Although," Kaoru said, "now that I think about it, you are old."
