Chapter 1

Kurama…Kurama. The voice slipped its way into his mind softly. It seemed to beckon him, call and coax him. It enticed him with promises of bliss and temptations of power, as if the speaker were seducing him. Come to me…

Immediately Kurama snapped from his slumber. Little beads of sweat along his hairline glistened in the light of the moon. His whole body had a thin sheen of perspiration on it, the making him ache with a need left unbothered for far too long. He took a deep breath and listened for any hints of a physical being. There was nothing but the soft scent of lilies near his bed. Lazily, Kurama ran a hand through his red hair, and action that usually cleared his mind.

"You're thinking too hard," came the matter-of-fact statement from Hiei.

Hiei's small form sat comfortably on the window ledge near Kurama. His large eyes watched uncaring as dawn crept slowly up. He was well aware of the voice calling to Kurama and he didn't like it. It oozed power, a demon of high class and authority. Whenever Hiei sought to trace it back to its hiding place, he found it as elusive as the stars fading in the sky. The indivual calling Kurama was no fool and showed no signs of "slipping up." It unnerved Hiei more than he cared to display.

"I know," Kurama replied tiredly, "but I can't figure out where it comes from."

"Hnn."

Reaching past Hiei's ankle Kurama slid the window open a bit more. A cool breeze came through and with it a sense of forlorn hope. That scent, the one that, along with the voice, hunted him for months. It now filled and intoxicated him. He had the urge to follow it as it flowed out the window, but it was Hiei who made the first move.

"Stay here and don't do anything stupid," he directed Kurama before leaping from the ledge. He wouldn't find it, Kurama knew that.

"But you're welcome to try…" echoed the voice.
