A/N: Typical suicide story. You've been warned. Just a ventfic to help me get over something.
Don't own anything, blah blah blah.
A woman stood warily on the roof of 28 State Street, Boston. At almost exactly 500 feet tall, the Bank of New England building had shown promise. Getting in was not as complicated as she thought it would be. A flash of her badge and the man at the door stood aside and let her in, paying little attention to her as she found an elevator that brought her to the top floor of the building.
Fiddling with the corner of her dress, she looked out over the city. She had worked here for years and still wasn't as familiar with it as she wished to be. Taking small steps, the woman muttered the statistics of suicide rates to herself.
She hit the edge of the building, her toes hanging precariously over the edge. The wind blew at her back, sending blonde curls into her face. Pushing them away, she looked down. The wind only slightly muffled the sounds of the busy city below her. After years in the headlines for discovering something and breaking a case as Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Maura Isles would have her last day in the news.
She closed her eyes, spread her arms out to either side. She took a deep breath and pulled her arms behind her, ready to take the one step that would ultimately bring her peace.
A larger, warmer hand encased her own, and she steeled herself. She would know that hand anywhere. The dark haired girl rubbed a thumb across the delicate skin of her hand, with just one word. "Why?"
Maura shut her eyes, taking a deep breath and holding it in as long as she could. When asked to explain herself, she could not manipulate all of the feelings in her head and form words to answer the woman with. It was all just too much. She shook her head, feeling tears begin to form, "Go away."
The hand that encased hers did not move, and her attempts to shake out of the detective's grip failed. Jane raised her voice to be heard over the sounds of the city below. "If you step down off of that ledge, I'll hold you and never, ever let you go. If you jump, I'm going with you. I'm not leaving you alone."
"I don't need you to save me," Maura muttered, her voice wavering. "Go away. I've been alone all my life, I don't need anyone now."
Jane stepped closer to the edge, bringing Maura's hand up and kissing it gently, "I'm not leaving."
Maura leaned forward and jumped back quickly, pulling Jane away from the edge with her. The detective moved them to a safe distance and drew the blonde in close to her, whispering soft words into the crying woman's ear. "You're alright. I've got you. I love you." She started crying as well, pressing a kiss to the top of Maura's head. "I won't let you fall."
