Calm Before the Storm

The boy creeps down the stairs
Like a breath in the night
He walks on air
Every footfall is none
Not because he's scared
Not because he's frightened
Of the shadows and what they bring
This boy does not fear

Such an odd grace with which he prowls
He moves like a panther under the fabric of the dark
Still.
He watches, he waits.
Nothing, which is not good, not good at all
He'll have you know he got up for a reason
And this boy is not denied

He slinks to the curtains
And gently pulls one aside
The moonlight slices like a knife
Up the huge gothic window
Through the black of the room
He winces, he hates the light
But alas, such inconveniences are necessary
There will come a day when they are not.

Of course, his father will pay for leaving him here
Of course, his mother's a dear for having him here
The dearest victim in the world

The sea outside glints in the moonlight
You'd never know it was cold but for the rocks
And the mansion on the other side
And the grave that lies on this

The sea is cold, the sea is wide, the sea is deep
A wave of the hand and a
Small tug at the corner of the mouth. The sea is nothing.
"So you see, Father, there is really nothing between us."

Midnight. Yes, yes... The door creaks open
Like the bones of a wasteland coming to life
The caretaker slumps in and the boy steals out
A pity he will have to leave that sound
It is the nicest thing about this building

His faces the wind for a moment
Then he dives
The water is ice, a hundred steely knives
A weaker man would have died
But not this boy
This is the boy who lives
This boy will not die

He starts to swim
The swim is long
But, there really is nothing between us
And our son, he knows that.
