Behind my Eyelids

Breathe in, breathe out.

It was dark behind his eyelids, but he wasn't afraid. He didn't struggle to keep them shut, he didn't have the urge to open them. Because this darkness was his darkness. He knew, when he opened his eyes, he'd see the same colour, but it wouldn't be the same, wouldn't be him. It scared him. So he kept them shut, and, soothing himself softly, pretended that it was dark, because he wanted it to be that way.

Breathe in, breathe out.

He pretended not to be alone. behind his eyelids the black became a slight tint of pink. Swirly, warm. Behind his eyelids another pair of eyes opened. Wanda. She smiled.

Breathe in, breathe out.

Warmth swapped over his trembling body. His racing heart began to slow down. She did that to him. Wanda. She was here with him, even if he was alone.

Breathe in, breathe out.

He managed a smile, remembering her voice, her scent. Her beautiful, breathtaking eyes. He longed to take her in his arms, to play with her hair, but behind his eyelids, he could only remember. Where was Wanda?

Breathe in –

Was she alone? Was she doing okay? Was she afraid? Did she think of him as well? Was she okay? Did something happen? To her? Where was Wanda?

A frown appeared on his face, worried about his love. He had to find her, to find out if she was alright. For his Wanda he would be brave. He would forget that he was afraid. He would open his eyes. Now.

He struggled, but his eyes wouldn't listen. His eyes stayed shut. He tried to command them, but his mouth wouldn't speak. Bewildered, he tried to move. Nothing. Wanda was there, smiling, behind his eyelids, but it was a picture, only a picture. Where was Wanda?

Panic. Small tears formed and fell from his closed eyes. He couldn't feel them. There was a sound, dull, far away, but … familiar. He clinged to it, the only thing that told him that his senses still worked.

There was light. From outside, it was shining through his eyelids. Something soft and warm brushing his cheek. He felt it. He heard her voice, clearly, quietly calling his name. Tears stopped falling. The panic ceased. "… Cosmo? Wake up, sweetie, it's okay …"

His eyelids loosened and he opened his eyes. She was okay. Only a dream.

Breathe out.
