The Giver; The Next Chapter "Almost There..." Jonas thought. He couldn't hold on much longer. Everything was fading away. Suddenly, there was pain. Jonas had experienced pain before, but before, he always knew that he would wake up safely in the Annex, with the Giver by his side. This was not a memory. This would be different. "AGH!" Jonas screamed. His leg was bent the wrong way. He hit his head and rolled off the sled. He almost lost a grip of Gabriel, but he grabbed on at the last second. Gabriel was screaming, but Jonas wasn't listening. He was in so much pain, pain like he had never experienced. He was crying, but he didn't notice. Then everything went black in Jonas's point of view. He saw a bright light, but a figure was blocking it. With every once of strength Jonas had left, he raised his head and opened his eyes. It had stopped snowing, but it was still very blurry. He could hear Gabriel crying in the back round, but what he heard mostly was the voice. "Are you okay?" he heard it he just couldn't make out who it was. There was some sort of figure standing over him. He couldn't see who the person was or if it was a person at all! "Someone get a doctor..." the voice said again, but it faded this time. Jonas dropped his head and closed his eyes. Jonas woke up three hours later in a hospital. It took a while for him to regain his vision. When he did he saw a person standing over him. "You're up. How are you feeling?" the person said. "May I have a relief of pain pill please?" Jonas asked. The person stared at him blankly. "I beg your pardon?" Jonas was tired of being polite. "I want a relief of pain pill, NOW!" he screamed. He tried to move his neck but he couldn't. There was something around it keeping it in place. There was one more on his leg. Jonas remembered these from a memory of some sort, they were meant for healing but Jonas couldn't figure out the word. "What are these?" he asked motioning to his leg and neck with his hands, which were covered in bandages. "Well, that cast is for your neck, that's broken. And that one is for your leg. You broke it in three places and dislocated it." He explained. Jonas didn't understand most of thins, but there were more important things. He looked at the man. "This person sure wears strange clothes!" he thought. What were you doing out there in the cold?" he asked, "Can you tell me your name?" "Jonas." He said. His eyes scanned the room. He saw a desk with books on it! "He has access to them!" Jonas thought. "Last name please." The man said. "What?" "Can you tell me your last name please?" the person said again, more slowly this time. "I'm sorry. I'm not familiar with that term; last name..." "Wow you must of hit your head hard!" he chuckled, "Oh well, we'll talk about that later." "Is this elsewhere?" Jonas asked suddenly. The doctor stared at him strangely again, "Well if that's what you want to call it... sure." He was here! Jonas wondered what was going on back in his community. People were probably panicking. He wondered how the Giver was. Jonas sighed and looked at the desk again. There were pictures of people on it, and they were also wearing strange clothes, they were similar to the ones the people were wearing in the memory of Christmas. "Excuse me sir, but may I ask you a question?" Jonas said. "Go right ahead." The person said. "In this community you live in... is there love?" Jonas asked nervously. "Why yes Jonas there is. Lot's of it." Jonas leaned back and smiled. He had no idea where he was. He knew people back in his community were panicking and the Giver was in a lot of trouble. But, there was hope that things could be better. At least there was hope.
