Disclaimer: Sadly, I don't own any Kingdom Hearts characters. I'm just using them for my little, insignificant story.

A/N: I quit my last Kingdom Hearts story…too complicated. This one shall be complicated, but I will force myself to understand. Hah, understanding my own thoughts. Doesn't sound too hard, but then again…

Chapter 1 – The Perfect Beginning

Kairi jumped down from the slippery, wooden dock into the damp sand. She looked to the sky, expecting to see clouds. Instead, the dark shadow had disappeared from the sky and a small rainbow was visible from the vast shores of Destiny Islands.

"Strange, isn't it?" a voice asked from behind Kairi. She turned, her strawberry hair in disarray, to see a young boy around her age, about fifteen, and smiled.

"Hey Sora," she said and looked up at the sky again. After a short pause, she turned back to her longtime childhood friend. "Yeah, it is weird."

Sora walked up next to Kairi, his spiky, brown hair not moving an inch, and looked into her deep, blue eyes. Kairi gazed back at Sora for what seemed like eternity, and then looked away. She remembered the promise she made to herself; she had told herself she would not fall in love with Sora.

"I think we should go to class," she suggested with a quiet tone and started to inch away from Sora, half unwillingly. She flattened out her short, purple skirt and looked down at her shoes.

"Sure, right," Sora muttered, apparently lost in thought. He stood up straight, and then started back towards the small town in which their school was located. Kairi followed suit, carefully staying a step behind her friend.

As they neared the small learning center, Kairi and Sora split up to find their friends. Kairi met up with Namine by the front gate, while Sora ran off to find Riku on the small field.

Kairi ran up to Namine with a dreamy look in her eyes and a big smile splashed on her face. "I talked to him, I really did! Just now!" she shouted and gave her tiny, blonde friend a friendly hug.

Namine looked back at her friend with a stern look present on her pale face. She took Kairi's hands in her own and said, "Look, you know you can't do anything with him. You know why."

"Even if…something might happen. Even if…something strange is going on. Even if…I can't go out with him. I can't still talk to him, can't I?" Kairi questioned her friend and looked around at all of the people chatting with each other.

"Whatever, but what if there really is something strange happening? Besides, don't you think Riku is just a little obsessed over the whole adventure thing?" Namine asked Kairi. She stared her friend down, waiting for an answer.

Meanwhile, Sora and Riku were casually chatting on the corner of the green 'field', if you could even call it a field. It was more like a large patch of grass, with lots of sand mixed in.

"So, when do you want to leave?" Sora asked his tall, silver-haired, witty friend and motioned towards the beach where a small raft, under construction, laid.

"Depends. Are Kairi and Namine coming with us?" Riku asked in a serious tone and then coughed impatiently.

"Kairi is coming, but not the latter. So you're really serious about this whole thing?" Sora inquired. He studied Riku's bored face, looking for an answer that could possibly be found somewhere in Riku's mysterious, turquoise eyes.

"Sure, I am. I mean, come on. There has to be something else out there. All we know of are these few islands, and beyond that is ocean as far we can see. The few people who have tried to go exploring have never come back. You can see that may mean we won't either, but who knows? We may just find an adventure," Riku rambled on, confident in himself and pleased with his conclusion.

"Right, an adventure," Sora commented, then sauntered off to his class at the sound of the bell.
