Let's Be Honest

A/N: Pre-FFX.

She has offered herself to him, of her own volition, insisting that, were they to wed, their lives would be complete. What she hasn't done is ask him, consider what it is that he wants and doesn't. In her eyes, he can see that she thinks only of her own feelings for him, justifying her selfishness with her statement:

"We'll be happy together."

Sadly, he looks at her. He can't imagine being satisfied with accepting such a preposterous offer.

Her feelings far outweigh his own, but he can say nothing. He just looks at her, for only a moment, and looks away.

"Why not?"

He doesn't answer her question. Just turns his back on her. He can't bring himself to tell her that he doesn't share her ideas. To say that he loves her would be a lie.

In the moments that follow, she leaves him, quiet, but surely in tears. The priest's daughter had offered her heart, and for nothing.

Auron knows what a fool he is, but he just doesn't love her.
