I wrote this little ficlet awhile ago for a friend and just stumbled across it again today. The prompt given was SasuNaru and rain. Takes place in canon, exact timing undetermined. I don't own Naruto.
It was raining that day in Konohagakure, something surprisingly rare given the lush forests that made up much of the Fire Country.
Uzumaki Naruto sat alone in his tiny apartment, the only indication he was alive being the steady rise and fall of his chest as he stared listlessly across the village through an open window. His mood mirrored the overcast sky above, which only ever meant one thing these days—Sasuke.
He wondered where his ex-teammate was and what he was up to. Could he be caught in the rain or was he perhaps somewhere safe and warm, quietly watching the storm as Naruto himself was doing?
The thought stirred something inside of him; it was yet another thing that connected them, this storm, however insignificant or far-fetched the idea might seem.
It was such an obvious thing, yet it gave him strength and brought a smile to his lips. They still shared the same sky, Sasuke and he, and even if that really was all they had left in common, it was enough for Naruto. It was hope in its barest form.
"I'm going to bring you back, Sasuke," Naruto swore, his eyes sparkling with renewed determination. "Even if it kills us both."
