Fanfic Dominoes Game Challenge. Pairing: Remus/Hermione
If You Dare Challenge. Prompt: Vague Misery
Silent Tears
She knew it was wrong. From the moment she first laid eyes on him, she'd tried so hard to change her feelings, but she was already trapped; incapable of stopping herself.
It was just a silly crush on a teacher. Nothing to worry about! Except when it became admiration for a remarkable man; friendship when they spent so many weeks together at Grimmauld Place.
He was clever and funny and lonely, and she wanted to stay there with him.
He had a girlfriend and she had to stop herself from making a scene. He was worried about age differences – he'd probably laugh if she told him her feelings.
And then he was married. He had a baby! She gave up, moved on. There were things to do and there was no telling if they would even survive the war. All those nights spent alone, she worried constantly.
It was almost impossible, having to hide her excitement at seeing him again during the battle. It was short-lived anyway. He was dead before she had a moment to say hello, and then her world was crumbling.
She had to pretend to be okay, she had to fight. And when it was all over she locked herself in a dorm and cried herself to sleep.
The good thing about war: nobody asked who she mourned for. There were others besides him, but they weren't as important. She didn't shudder at the loss of Fred, or wonder how anyone would survive without Colin.
She lived and lied and the world moved on, but she couldn't.
For months she would go to his grave and dutifully place flowers there, and even some for his wife. It felt wrong, but she couldn't bring herself to ignore the woman who had been a friend.
She placed two carnations by each stone and allowed her fingers to trace the engraving on his.
"I'm sorry," she whispered. "I won't come again."
A tap of the wand and the carnations were red roses. Her final farewell before apparating away.
A/N:
I had so much trouble with this and I hate it so much. I don't even know how to write Hermione/Remus. Bleh.
Anyway, I have a second chapter sorta planned.
