Narcissa Malfoy stood in front of the window, but she did not see the things happening in her beautiful garden. Her mind was off somewhere else, somewhere in the past. It wandered past her early childhood.
Little Cissy Black watched her friend yelling at her. She willed herself to cry, but couldn't, as the boy she had given her pure heart to ran away from her in horror.
The grown up Narcissa closed her eyes, remembering the feeling of being rejected. She had been so innocent, at the tender age of only seven years old. But she had genuinely loved him, as much as a little girl can love a little boy.
Memories came back to her as she thought of her youth. Memories of learning about the purity of blood, which apparently mattered more than the purity of heart. The pain she had felt when her sister got punished for being who she was, loving who she loved.
Narcissa knew when she had changed. She knew exactly the time and date; and could even smell the roses if she breathed in deep enough.
"Cissy," Narcissa turned around to face a young man. His love for her was obvious, as were his intentions. He offered her flowers and a small box. He offered her his love, but it wasn't enough. She let him down, and he left wordlessly, leaving the world open for her. A grey world.
A small tear made its way down her cheek as she remembered. She shivered as her breath stained the glass. She felt like crying, screaming, but did nothing. She merely stood there in her beautiful manor, watching her beautiful garden and feeling empty. The world was still grey.
"Take my offer, Narcissa." Another man said, a far more suitable man. Narcissa Black was nineteen years old, and this man offered her the world. A world filled with darkness, void of love or compassion. The Dark Lord ruled this world he offered; and she took it silently, accepting his ring.
Narcissa felt a hand on her shoulder and saw in the glass a reflection of her hope. Her son; her wonderful son. His grey eyes showed concern as they noticed the tearstain on her cheek. His lips lightly grazed her skin.
She remembered everything about him. His birth, the first smile he gave her. How his eyes reminded her of him. She had never hated him, though he was the spitting image of his father. She remembered his childhood, how she had doted on him, buying him everything he wanted, whenever he wanted it. She remembered fighting with her husband, not wanting her son to leave for Durmstrang. Narcissa remembered Lucius leaving and how her dear, beautiful son had treated her ever since. She was so proud of her Draco, of the man he had become.
"Mother," he spoke softly, as she turned her head to face him. "I came to escort you down to dinner." A smile graced his beautiful features and she couldn't help but admire him. She took the hand he offered and knew that her world wasn't so grey after all.
