Mary laid the paperback down on her stomach and shifted sidewards on the lounge chair so that Dean could join her. He snuggled into her side and flung one arm over her, his little body almost making the heat unbearable.
"Mommy, why's the sky blue?"
This was the latest in a long line of 'why' questions, usually questions that neither Mary nor John could answer. That meant that Dean was getting a lot of nonsense answers, but she figured that if he was really hung up on anything, he could always look it up when he was older.
"So the oceans and seas wouldn't be lonely."
The arm around her withdrew and he perched up on his elbows so that he could look at her face. She brushed his sweaty bangs out of his eyes.
"Why'd they be lonely?"
"Ah..."
"Because we keep on taking all their water." John appeared, garden hose in hand, a wicked grin on his face.
"Run, Dean, run!" she shouted, pulling him up and helping him off the lounge chair. He took off at a sprint while John stopped in front of her.
"Don't you even think about it, mister." She giggled, ruining the 'serious' tone of her words.
John's grin widened, giving her the fluttery feeling in the stomach that it always did.
"You'll get yours," he promised, before taking off after their son, hose trailing after him.
Still smiling, she picked her book back up and started reading. No matter what, it was going to suffer water damage, so she might as well read a little more before the ink ran.
