Itachi knew he was better off sealed this way until the war was over and Kabuto and Madara's jutsu broken, but he was leaving the most important thing to him undone. Sasuke was still out there, still deluded and full of hatred. The thought of being able to do nothing…being trapped here in darkness…
"Itachi…" Naruto spoke with his back turned. His tone was that of a comrade, of one who understood Itachi's burden perfectly, because it had become his own. "I'll do everything to save your brother. I'll keep them safe. Sasuke…and the Uchiha name."
The blonde turned his head back toward Itachi just enough for the Uchiha to see his profile, to catch the wet sheen in his eyes.
"I swear it."
As the cocoon closed and Naruto and Bee took off toward the battlefield, Itachi allowed Konoha's once-cursed child, the boy he'd only met a handful of times, the chance to be what Itachi no longer could.
His beloved brother's salvation.
