Sound the bugle now - play it just for me
Stanton walked down the beach. He felt lost. His time was coming, he could feel it. The regulators would soon know of his betrayal to the atrox. They would find him and kill him. Maybe Serena too.
As the seasons change - remember how I used to be
He remembered when they had just started to see each other. How much he had loved her. How much he still loved her.
Now I can't go on - I can't even start
I've got nothing left - just an empty heart
But know he knew they couldn't be together ever again. If she lost her life because of him, he wouldn't be able to stand himself. Unfortunately suicide isn't exactly possible for an immortal.
I'm a soldier - wounded so I must give up the fight
There's nothing more for me - lead me away…
He could leave L.A., never come back. But at the same time he didn't really have another purpose. The atrox meant nothing to him anymore, not that it ever really had.
Or leave me lying here
Maybe there was another way. He didn't care about anything but Serena and he strongly doubted anyone cared about him besides her.
Sound the bugle now - tell them I don't care
There's not a road I know - that leads to anywhere
Carlights danced on a distant dune. Probably teenagers looking for a good time. Oh well, he would be gone before they got here.
Without a light I fear that I will - stumble in the dark
Lay right down - decide not to go on
He reached out for Serena's mind. Seeking to destroy all memory of himself. But as happy memory after happy memory appeared in front of him he faltered. Let her keep her memories, he thought. Perhaps they will comfort her when I'm gone.
He headed towards the ocean. Began walking in. Even at night the water was still semi-warm. He was nearly knee deep when a voice called to him.
Then from on high - somewhere in the distance
"Stanton??" it was Serena. Coming fast over the dune. Her hair flying out behind her. "What are you doing.." she started to ask, but Stanton felt a tickling in his mind and knew she was finding her own answer.
There's a voice that calls - remember who you are
If you lose yourself - you courage soon will follow
"You can't do this." She said. I love you. Her mind called.
I know,
he replied. But I'm doing this for you, I don't want you to get hurt. She pulled off her flip-flops and strode into the water. Until she was right up in his face. I know the danger, and I'm still here. Then she threw her arms around his neck and kissed him. He snaked his arms around her waist and kissed her back.
So be strong tonight - remember who you are
It seemed hours later when she finally pulled away. There were voices coming over the dune now and Stanton felt eager to leave. He started to walk away, but she grabbed his arm. We'll beat the atrox one day, you'll be free and we can be together.
Ya you're a soldier now - fighting in a battle
To be free once more…
He faded into shadow and Serena wrapped her arms around herself, it was a cold night.
Ya that's worth fighting for
