Green Eyed Monster
Selfish, mercurial, brutal; all words that can be used to accurately describe Kadaj. However, there are some less obvious traits he has. Hidden in the deepest, darkest corners of his mind, there was only raw envy.
The object of his jealousy?
A mad man by the name of Sephiroth.
Kadaj did as Mother told, and for what? For Sephiroth to be resurrected? For Sephiroth to take his place? Everything Kadaj had done was for the older man's sake, and he absolutely hated it. He hated that no matter how hard he tried, how much he struggled, he could not escape Sephiroth's shadow. He hated that he was the marionette and Sephiroth the puppeteer controlling him.
But most of all, he hated that it hurt him when Cloud looked at him and saw only a Remnant.
Every time they fought, he could see the haunted, almost nostalgic look in the blonde's eyes. In Cloud's mind, he was fighting Sephiroth. The knowledge of such a thing caused a dull ache to form in Kadaj's chest. He wanted Cloud to see him as his own person, not just a piece of the puzzle that was Sephiroth.
And so, when he lay dying in Cloud's arms, he certainly did not expect to find his killer looking at him with such a soft expression. Kadaj would have laughed if he wasn't in so much pain at the moment; the only time Cloud would ever see him as himself was at the very end. And, surprisingly, that didn't hurt at all.
Sephiroth had Mother's undivided attention.
But, in that one moment, Cloud was his. And that was all that really mattered.
Author's Note: WELL. My sister, luvlessinred, requested a Xion-centric drabble. That...didn't go as planned. SOOOOO I ended up writing this instead. Go figure.
About the title:
People that are jealous/envious are sometimes referred to as "green eyed monsters". Kadaj also has green eyes. Thus, the title for this piece.
