Their boots thudded soddenly against the packed earth as they ran towards the shelter of the small cave at the bottom of the crest. Sabriel held the clapper of Saraneth tightly with her fingers to keep the bell from sounding as she ran. Touchstone had luckily just come to a point in casting his spell on the broken stone, where he could stop without the binding losing its merit. He had hardly finished tracing the last charter mark in the air with his hand when the downpour began. Dripping wet they stepped into the cave, light illuminating them both instantly as each cast the marks for light. Sabriel fastened Saraneth safely in the bandolier before turning her attention back to Touchstone. He looked like a drowned cat; his curly hair pulled down long around his face, held down by the moisture. His expression was less than happy, frown lines creased around his mouth.
"Why did we stop? A bit of rain won't hurt us; I could have continued to cast the spell." Touchstone grumped batting away the hand Sabriel had lifted to his wet hair. Sabriel sighed. She loved this man but sometimes he could be so impatient.
"We stopped," she began grabbing his hand in hers "because the rain, while it may annoy or keep some of the lesser dead down, determined ones would not stop. It hampers them, but it also hampers me, muffles my senses and more importantly the sound of the bells. We stopped so that we would live to finish our task my love." She looked into his face and saw his annoyance drain away. He could be impatient, but he was by no means deaf to sound reasoning. Danger still lurked in the Old Kingdom for both of them.
"You're right Sabriel." He said solemnly, he squeezed her hand and continued his eyes twinkling "Lets see what we can do to keep ourselves entertained while we wait out this rain." She laughed and kissed him.
** Story prompted by my friend, I wanted to write but had no ideas so I asked her to give me some prompts. I got : Sabriel & Touchstone, a bell and rain. Thx for reading*
