………………
Angeline Fowl stumbled out of the back door gasping for breath.
Artemis fired a single blast from Holly's handgun. The blast exited the barrel, and then was whipped one minute in to the past saving the elf captain as he knew it would. Then something happened that Arty didn't to expect. The ghostly images of the past disappeared and his friends were still dead. Artemis felt Abbot's blade slide into his body.
As this happened Artemis realized what had happened. He had created a parallel universe- another time line. One in which, as far he knew, they had survived and the one he was in, in which they hadn't.
She had run from the room, to stop herself from breaking down in front of the others. Sobs shock her frame.
The ground beneath Artemis and Abbot disappeared, the disintegrating time spell sucking it and them in to the past.
When they rematerialised Artemis was dismayed to find he was still impaled on Abbot's sword. With blurry eyes he stared at the tall dark haired woman that they had appeared in front of.
He was gone. Her husband was gone.
"No" gasped Artemis when realization struck.
The smell of sulphur and a crackling sound filled the air causing Angeline to look up. The sight before her almost caused her heart to stop. In front of her was her little Arty impaled on the sword of a demonic creature.
Without thinking Angeline grabbed her son and pulled him into her arms, her silver bangles collided with a chink behind Artemis's back. Abbot was palled somewhere else by the time spell.
"Mother. I'm sorry. I tried so hard. Butler will be able to explain in a few years," whispered Artemis. He knew exactly when he was. His mother had only worn that outfit once, now he knew why, the day they were told of his father's supposed death.
That was the last thought that would ever past through Artemis Fowl II's mind as he died in his mother's arms.
This was the scene that Butler walked out to. Artemis lying dead in his mother's arms. Butler spun on his heels staring back into the living room where he saw Artemis on the computer reading about fairies of all things, Butler turned back to Angeline.
"How?" Butler finally managed to mutter.
"He said we would understand one day."
"You go and clean up. I'll deal with this," said Butler lifting Artemis's body from his mother and walked away.
20 minutes later Angeline was climbing the stairs to the attic, showered and changed. She locked the door behind her and then collapsed on to the floor crying. She had lost her husband and in a few years she would lose her baby boy.
Meanwhile downstairs unaware an 11-year-old Artemis chanced upon a snippet of information that sparked an ingenuus plan in his mind involving gold and LEPrecons.

Author's note: This is an alternate ending to the fithe book and finishes before the beginning of the first book. Angeline managed to convince herself that the sight of her son impaled on Abbot's blade was just another hallucination brought on by depression. While Butler remembers Artemis's death Abbot had disappeared before Butler arrived. So Butler was unaware that it was a demon that had killed Arty. If he had clearly Butler would have not allowed Artemis to be involved in the events of the fifth book. Butler kept an eye out for Arty after Artemis left for Hybras because he hoped that it was not the event that would claim his young charge's life.
